Training and Certifications: Qualified Doesn’t Mean Experienced

The decision to outsource some or all of your IT services is not easy, especially when you have internal employees who are part of the organizational culture.

Your IT employees are no doubt qualified for their roles. As of 2019, 87% of IT professionals held at least one certification, and we are confident this number has grown while everyone was at home during the early stages of the pandemic. But qualified is different from experienced. A surgeon who just left medical school is qualified and certified to perform their work—but would you want to be their first patient?

In part 2 of our continuing series about the benefits of managed IT services, we want to discuss how the experience of consultants can support and grow your internal team through collaboration and shared work.

Which IT Services Should be Outsourced?

Here are some of the commonly-outsourced IT services:

  • Application or software development

  • Database creation and management

  • Disaster recovery

  • Cybersecurity

  • Hardware and infrastructure installation and support

  • Technical support and help desk services

These are not the only IT services that can be outsourced, but we chose them to feature here because they reflect areas of IT where experience is even more important than simple qualifications. No matter how qualified your IT team is, they have only encountered the challenges and barriers that exist at your company. A consultant, on the other hand, has worked in diverse situations and been called in to fix issues when situations are dire. Their perspective can be an incredibly valuable addition to the toolbox of your internal IT team.

What Are the Types of IT Outsourcing?

IT outsourcing can function in many different ways, including:

  • Multi-Sourcing: In a multi-sourcing approach, different IT services are outsourced to different companies, meaning you will work with multiple vendors. This approach is often preferred in situations where a business doesn’t want to become dependent on one vendor, but on the negative side, it means more vendor management, higher costs, and reduced opportunity for a unified focus on quality control.

  • Co-Sourcing: In a co-sourcing arrangement, the IT services vendor works with an internal team to share responsibilities and achieve goals. When companies work with Moser in this capacity, we also make it a priority to share our knowledge and help the internal team gain skills.

  • Process Outsourcing: In this scenario, one or more IT processes are completely outsourced to a vendor with more experience. For instance, the help desk and troubleshooting process may be outsourced so employees experiencing issues can get them resolved quickly without an internal team needing to put their work on pause to solve a problem.

  • Project Outsourcing: Lastly, specific projects like developing or installing new software may be outsourced. This puts the budget, timeline, and success of the project in the hands of the IT services provider. Project-specific vendors should stay in constant transparent communication with your business about the progress, achievements, and any barriers.

What are the Advantages of IT Project Outsourcing?

When it comes to IT project outsourcing specifically, the primary benefit is access to on-demand experience and perspective on the best way to achieve the project. The decision to contract with a third-party means immediate access to IT experts without the need for a hiring process, or skilling up internal employees.

The benefits of experience also usually pay forward into cost savings. Even a single experienced consultant on a project can prevent hours of rework or unnecessary spending on hardware or software that doesn’t actually address the needs at hand.
