What Is Empowerment in Business?

Empowerment in business, at a basic level, is about giving people power or authority. However, this concept goes beyond simple delegation. Empowerment evokes strength and confidence from employees, leadership, and the surrounding community by giving them the tools they need to perform their best.

What is an example of empowerment in business?

Empowerment can take many forms, like:

  • Collaborating rather than competing

  • Providing high-quality solutions to your community

  • Fostering communication and feedback between employees and managers

  • Offering generous and competitive compensation and benefits packages to employees with perks like unlimited PTO, free mental health services, remote and in-person work flexibility, etc.

  • Practicing random acts of kindness to brighten someone’s day

  • Providing continuous learning and talent development opportunities for your workforce and leadership team

  • Encouraging autonomous decision making amongst employees to promote creative and innovative solutions

  • Giving back to your community by volunteering or donating to various causes

Employees feeling empowered because they were giving the tools they needed to perform their best

Why Is Empowerment So Important in IT?

Supporting your workforce through empowerment, from entry-level employees to senior leadership, fosters a healthy environment for productivity and growth. This is even more important for IT teams, who face the ongoing battle of keeping up with new and evolving technology that the rest of your business relies on.

Consider this—the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 15% growth for computer and information technology occupations in the next decade, which is significantly faster than average. This kind of growth is exciting, but the fast and constant changes can be difficult to keep up with. As technology transforms and creates new demands on your business, your IT team needs all the help they can get to stay ahead of the curve.

What Are the Benefits of Empowerment?

At Moser Consulting, we’ve witnessed the effectiveness of empowerment for our business clients time and time again. For employees, some benefits of empowerment in business include:

  • Feeling valued for their contributions and efforts

  • Confidence to make challenging decisions and manage difficult tasks

  • New skills to further their professional development

  • Opportunities to have their voice and opinions heard

Those on the management and leadership side can look forward to:

  • A flexible and productive workforce capable of handling whatever comes their way

  • Saved time and energy to dedicate to higher-level issues

  • Engaged and motivated employees who excel in their work performance

  • Increased talent retention and loyalty from a workforce that feels cared for and appreciated

Empowerment in Business Examples

What does empowering your business’s IT through Moser Consulting look like? Here are a few examples so you know what to expect.

Empowering Infrastructure Transitions

Empowering Infrastructure Transitions

Allied Solutions, a financial services provider, was faced with the overwhelming task of transitioning their IT workflow management software from ServiceNow to JIRA. JIRA’s platform offered different services at a lower cost that more aligned with the needs of Allied Solutions, which was the main reason for the switch.

Many IT professionals can understand the pain of changing a leading software in their tech stack—you have to ensure functionality remains consistent through the transition and that no active tasks or tickets are lost in the transition process. Plus, you must juggle your normal routine on top of this rather enormous, subsidiary project.

These kinds of situations are exactly why IT teams need additional support and empowerment. They have enough on their plates as it is, and managing a project of this scale requires significant time and energy.

According to Patty Buckwalter, Director of Services and Support at Allied Solutions, “Moser was the muscle behind our adoption of JIRA. We know Moser’s team put in many hours, but they made it a relatively painless, easy task for us. The [Moser] team that signed with us was extremely responsive, totally receptive, and exceptionally understanding. I couldn't have been happier with the process.”

Empowering Data Organization and Analytics

Empowering Data Organization and Analytics

LittleStar ABA Therapy offers applied behavior analysis (ABA) services to individuals with autism in Indiana. They faced a common IT issue that many healthcare organizations face—enormous amounts of data strewn across multiple systems. For LittleStar, this included scheduling software, billing software, a CRM, and an HR database. While all those systems are necessary, having data stored inconsistently in multiple places makes data retrieval and comprehensive data analysis quite difficult.

When LittleStar came to Moser, they had a simple goal: to make sense of their data in ways they couldn’t before. However, because the ABA space is so unique and technical, they had initial concerns that an outsourced IT consultant wouldn’t be able to handle the challenge.

Moser’s Director of Analytics, Adrienne Watts, quickly proved that wouldn’t be an issue during the initial discovery phase of this project. Tim Courtney, MS, BCBA, and Chief Operating Officer of LittleStar put it like this: “[Adrienne] had a good sense of where we were at. She knew the ABA space was unique. Although it can take some time to understand ABA services and how they're delivered, Adrienne was able to get up to speed with that pretty quickly. That was a really awesome thing.”

The final solution? Moser’s Data & Analytics division designed and executed a new, consolidated database for LittleStar in Honeycomb. The Honeycomb platform excels at helping businesses launch data analytics solutions quickly and efficiently through its agile approach. Even during phase one of the database creation, LittleStar started seeing results.

“We’ve already been able to pull some of those different data points together and create reports, that's been so helpful,” said Courtney. “They've created a dashboard that allows the executives to see patient performance and a lot of metrics we couldn’t see before. It’s going to be very, very helpful for the clinical leaders to see and know what patients are maybe not getting—maybe they aren’t getting enough hours—with these analytics, we can figure out why and address that.”

Empowering Our Community

Empowering Our Community

As a leader in the IT industry, Moser is lucky to have numerous opportunities to give back to others. Of our core values, empowering our community is one that we hold close to our hearts. Our team, from our newest employees to our long-time leaders, believe in the power of supporting our communities and fostering a sense of goodwill with every interaction we have.

To support this shared value, Moser hosts various all-company charity events each year. For example, on the National Day of Service, our team members volunteer their time at food banks, animal shelters, schools, and other local charities. We’ve also participated as a team in panel builds for Habitat for Humanity for eight years now, and our employees greatly look forward to contributing to this cause each year.

What does this mean for our clients? It means they get unparalleled and exceptional service when working with our team here at Moser Consulting. By empowering those around us, Moser employees gain valuable, interpersonal skills while building strong relationships with their peers and other community members. When it comes time to working with clients, our team members apply those skills and provide a high level of empathy and personalized attention that’s not always easy to find in the world of IT.

Empowering Our Hoosier Workforce

Empowering Our Hoosier Workforce

Moser has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana for 10 years in a row. This annual program—presented by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce—aims to recognize Indiana businesses that create high-quality working conditions for their employees. As Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar puts it, “It is clear that a positive work environment makes employees more engaged in their job and in their company.” Folks are selected based on an employer report and comprehensive employee surveys.

We are thrilled to be able to offer such an attractive and growth-oriented work environment for our employees. What are the benefits of empowering our team members in this way? As Brinegar stated, we find that happy employees are engaged employees, and that in turn translates to better services for our clients. In a way, it’s a pay-it-forward approach—we focus on giving our employees the best work experience, and they in turn have the energy and desire to give our clients the best IT consulting experience.
